The Wednesday Waffle: Issue Twenty Five - Adapt...

A new Firefly comic hits the rack today, and the arrival of Farscape to streaming services has made me want to dig out my old Farscape comics. We see many adaptations of comics into movies and TV shows - how do we feel about franchises that go the other way? Firefly of course is a special case. Much beloved by fans, the show was cancelled half way through the first season and while the subsequent movie Serenity was some consolation having to cram half a season of telly into a hundred and six minutes meant that we missed out on a lot of stuff we should have seen. So the comics - initially published by Dark Horse and now with BOOM! - fill a Firefly shaped hole in a lot of our lives. It helps t

The Geeks at the Gates: Episode Thirty Four - Thought Bubbles and Marvelous Captains

WE DID IT!!!!! We finally managed to get three Geeks around a table - with huge thanks to new Geek Alice, who is joined by founding Geeks Regie and Jack as they collectively squee over the move of Thought Bubble from Leeds to Harrogate, and then consider whether the Captain Marvel movie was any good. (Spoilers - they loved it...) Click on the image below to go to the download page, or subscribe to The Geeks at the Gates wherever you get your podcasts. So, we first discussed the astonishing news that the Thought Bubble Comic Convention is moving from Leeds to the Geek's home town of Harrogate. Details can be found on the Thought Bubble Website. We heartily recommend you get yourself some tick

The Wednesday Waffle: Issue Twenty Four - "It may not be for you and that's fine."

We're all very passionate about the things we like - but we live in times where most people are much more vocal about the things we hate. Here's why that's a bad thing... Let me take you back to a night in July 1999. Twenty Eight year old me is sitting in the Odeon (because The Everyman didn't exist back then...) as the room goes dark, the curtains open and the legend "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." appears on the screen. There is an audible intake of breath as a cinema full of people who have been waiting for this since 1983 begin watching Star Wars: Episide One - The Phantom Menace. Before that moment, there had been no Star Wars that I didn't like.* After that moment I had

The Geeks at the Gates: Episode Thirty Three - Shift, the Audiobook, chapters five and six.

We still haven't been able to get three geeks around a table (it's like herding cats, I tells ya!) so we're back with an unscheduled installment of the Audiobook Shift. Click on the image below to go to the download page, or simply subscribe to The Geeks at the Gates wherever you get your podcasts. Previously, Ellie was followed home by a man in a bowler hat, then kidnapped and taken to a cell in a place known as "The Office" by some cadaverous looking men, before being rescued by the bowler hatted man. Ellie and her rescuer were pursued by a man from The Office called Clerk George Mainwaring. They were able to escape - but can they still be tracked?

The Wednesday (Oh, OK. Friday) Waffle: Issue Twenty Three - Just (Captain) Marvelous!

So. You might have noticed, there's a new Marvel movie in town. At time of writing we haven't seen it, but here's why we're excited about Captain Marvel, and why we're bored of internet trolls. I mean, first of all - are you actually kidding me?! It's a Marvel movie - of course we're excited! Besides - look at the poster, Samuel L. Jackson with hair! Also, of course we're excited - Captain Marvel is an awesome character, and Carol Danvers has a long and rich history which deserves to be explored and celebrated on screen. Carol has cropped up in the Waffle before, of course, in the second part of "Costume Party" back in September last year - where she was highlighted because in her Ms Marvel

The Geeks at the Gates: Episode Thirty Two - Shift, the Audiobook, Chapters three and four.

Still not able to get the Geeks around a table, so we're back with the second installment of the Audio Novel "Shift". Where is Ellie? Who is the Cadaverous Man? Who is the Man in the Bowler Hat? Who grabbed Ellie as she came out of the shower? Listen and find out... Click on the image below to go to the download page, or search for The Geeks at the Gates wherever you get your podcasts.
