Geeks at the Gates Podcast: Episode 25 - Jodie The Doctor, half term report

December 8, 2018

So, as we post this the last episode of Modern Who's eleventh series is about to air. The Geeks got together a week or so ago to discuss what they liked and didn't like about The Doctor, Yaz, Ryan and Graham's adventures from "The Woman who fell to Earth" to "Kablam!"

Spoilers. They were (mostly) fans.

Show notes follow below the image.

Right. Well. We hate to do this to you, but Regie pointed out that incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall was head writer on Series One of Torchwood, and as such was responsible for the abomination that was Cyberwoman.

Jack had missed this and insisted on googling it. Regie said there'd be a link in the shownotes, but we're just going to put the picture here. Look away now if you don't want to see the worst costume in Doctor Who history - and yes, we're including the monster that was basically a bloke wrapped in green bubblewrap...

And yes. This is the best image we could find online. It's almost as though the BBC aren't thrilled with it as a piece of costume design and want us to forget. To be fair to Chibnall, he only wrote the script - calling for Ianto's girlfriend to go through an incomplete cyber-conversion. He wasn't responsible for the costume design.

On the other hand he was responsible for the fact that she was eventually killed by Torchwood's pet pterranadon, so, y'know, there's no way he comes out of this covered in glory...

Still, it lowers everyone's expectations for everything else...

When we talk about the "latest episode" we're talking about "Kerblam!" Only Regie and Hat had seen it at time of recording and it's safe to say that they weren't impressed. Hat in particular was reduced to incandescent, inarticulate rage - which is pretty unusual for her. We regret that most of the comment on that episode has been removed - even from the post credit out-takes, because although this is not a swear free podcast, we felt that there probably were limits - between them Regie and Hat dropped more F-Bombs in relation to that episode than you'd find in your average Tarrantino movie...
