OK. So we've had a chance to digest the news from Saturday. For Destination Venus the situation hovers somewhere between "sub optimal" and "existential threat". But if we're honest we've been hanging on by a thread for a couple of years now - if we were the sort of business that was in the business of giving up we would have done so some time ago.
Obviously, we're not thrilled about having to close for four weeks (and who knows, maybe longer). But here we are, so as the late, great Sean Connery's character Jim Malone would have said in the Untouchables: "The question is, what are you going to do about it?"
Well, we're going to reach out to our customers again. We will deliver your comics to you in a contactless manner every week through lockdown. All we ask is that you pay us for them every week, and if we're holding a chunk of stuff for you, we'd really appreciate it if you could take as much of it now as you can. (And yes, we understand that some of you can't - heavens know we understand that times are tough.)
Our greatest weakness is cashflow. Our Diamond bill is paid weekly, in advance. If we don't sell this week's rack we run the risk of not being able to pay for next week's. Any reserves we had were spent during the first lockdown, and the truth is that the first week we can't pay our diamond bill we're pretty much done.
On the up side, one of the things we get as a result of lockdown is time - which will enable us to get this website sorted out and properly maintained, with each week's rack online from the Saturday before it goes live and back issues and such also available. This should expand our online offering and boost our online revenue - which can only help.
So. Please don't worry about Desties. With your support we'll figure something out - it's only four weeks.
Take care of yourselves, and support your local independent businesses if you can. Together, we can and will get through this.
Stay safe and be well.
*Did anyone under forty get that reference?
