Geeking with Destination Venus #14: Tolkien about Miller

We promise that's the last time we do the "Tolkien about..." joke. We understand that it wasn't even funny the first time. Click on the image below to go to the download page, or just search for Geeking with Destination Venus wherever you get your podcasts.

We started with the controversy surrounding the decisions first to invite the American writer Frank Miller to the Thought Bubble Convention in November, and then to dis-invite him. You can read Thought Bubble's statement on the subject HERE, and everybody else's opinions pretty much all over the internet. We make no further comment except to say that we fully support and understand the actions taken by our friends at Thought Bubble.

In our discussion of the relationship between Frodo and Sam Alice mentions several resources that she intends to send to Regie. We're not putting them in these show notes because we'll be discussing them in a future edition, and we'll share them then.

As the discussion of the relationship between Frodo and Sam continued Alice mentioned the literary/media concept of the "Death of the Author". This is the idea that as readers we can interpret what an author has written and it doesn't matter if what we think about a character is what the author intended. You can read more about that HERE.

The discussion of the actors' attitudes to their characters' sexuality led to brief mention of Anthony Mackie's reaction to the idea that there might be a homosexual relationship between the characters of Sam "The Falcon/Captain America" Wilson and James "Bucky/Winter Soldier" Barnes. You can read more about that HERE.

There were two comics recommendations:

BERMUDA #1

Presenting a fantastic new adventure by New York Times best selling and multiple-Eisner award winning writer John Layman (Chew, Detective) and eye-popping, mind-blowing art by Nick Bradshaw (Spider-Man, Wolverine).

There's a region in the Atlantic Ocean where planes disappear, ships are lost, and traveling souls go missing... never to be heard from again.

And there's an island within this place, mysterious and uncharted, untouched by time and civilization, where all who are lost end up-human or other!

Bermuda lives here. She's 16, scrappy, and living on this insane and wondrous jungle island-fighting at every turn to survive-is the only life she has ever known. She can handle the dinosaurs, the pirates, the crazed soldiers, dark magicians, and strange monsters. But the weird new kid who washes ashore just may be the biggest challenge Bermuda has ever faced-as he drags her along on a perilous rescue mission she wants no part of… and he's likely to be the death of both of them!

SAVAGE HEARTS #1

She's a brawny barbarian bruiser with a broken heart; he's a lonely beastman who talks to dinosaurs. What happens when they team up against an evil sorcerer? Action, comedy, and romance in this all-new jungle fantasy romcom from Aubrey Sitterson (No One Left to Fight, The Comic Book Story of Professional Wrestling) and Jed Dougherty (World's Finest, Harley Quinn, Justice League: Future's End). Includes the special print single issue-exclusive back-up No Kings, No Masters by Aubrey Sitterson and Goran Gligovic!

Regie then also mentioned that Destination Venus has moved Free Comic Book Day from 14th August to 28th August. Find out more about Free comic Book Day and why it's been moved HERE.

Finally there was some science about moon formation around extra-solar planets - included mostly because it blew Regie's mind. Read more on that HERE.
