The Daily Waffle: Episode Forty Eight
SHANG-CHI FILM TO ALTER CHARACTERS FROM COMICS
OK, so far so predictable. The continuity of the MCU is already different in many ways from the comics that were its source material. This feels like a biggie though - if it's true.
It is reported that in the movie (the release of which has been pushed back three months to 7th May 2021) Shang-Chi will have a love interest - again, no biggie, that's happened in the comics many times - but in the movie that love interest will be Fah Lo Suee played by Awkwafina. If you're not a fan of Shang-Chi comics you might not get why this is potentially awkward, but if you are you'll know that in the comics Fah Lo Suee is Shang-Chi's sister.
Now, obviously if this report is true they clearly won't be siblings in the film, and given that Shang-Chi isn't a well known character and most people watching the movie won't be familiar with his back story, it doesn't really matter. Right?
And on some levels, no, it doesn't. But it does to me. Because one of the things I can do as a retailer when a previously less well known character gets some movie prominence is introduce the original comics to a whole bunch of new readers - maybe even people who are new to comics - and little changes like this can be confusing.
And given that the character of Fah Lo Suee isn't likely to get much audience recognition in theatres, there's no reason not to give Awkwafina's character a different name.
SERGEANT ROCK TO RETURN IN DEATH METAL
We haven't seen a lot of Sergeant Rock in recent years, but CBR has released some pages of Greg Capullo's art revealing the return of the iconic character - who hasn't been seen for more than a decade. The pages are unlettered, so it's not clear what's going on, but it's nice to see the old guy back. And yes, this whole segment is just an excuse to share some Greg Capullo art...
Vanity Fair has a first look at the character and, unsurprisingly, she looks great. The Old Guard is a favourite here at Venusian Towers. The movie is scheduled for later this year, but I guess we'll have to wait and see on that...
BOBA FETT TO RETURN IN THE MANDOLORIAN?
So it is claimed, and played by Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones. And if you're wondering how a character who was famously eaten by a Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi can turn up in a show set years after that, well, the fan film community has your back:
