The Daily Waffle: Episode One Hundred and Nine

NO VIDEO TODAY - TOO BUSY WITH DELIVERIES AND SETTING UP FOR RE-OPENING

DON'T FORGET - WE ARE OPEN THIS SATURDAY, 1pm -5.30pm

THE NEW TV BATWOMAN IS ANNOUNCED

And they've been refreshingly bold. Ruby Rose stepped down as Kate Kane / Batwoman at the end of the first season, and the producers were clear that they would re-cast the role.

We assumed that they would recast the role of Kate Kane. They didn't. They re-cast Batwoman. In season 2, Batwoman will not be Kate Kane. Instead they've cast Javicia Leslie - whose previous work is unfamiliar to me - as a new character named Ryan Wilder, who is a very different person to the disciplined, ex-military Kate Kane.

Wilder is "living in her van" and a "former drug runner", so we can expect something very different not just from Season 1, but also from the comics.

The essential themes are remaining the same, however. Kate Kane is an out gay Jewish woman. Ryan Wilder is an out gay woman of colour - so both characters are members of more than one marginalised group, and the association of Batwoman with the LGBTQ+ community remains for the TV version.

Some fans - and I think I number myself among them - may regret the loss of Kate Kane, and the deviation from the source material. But the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. TV is not comics. The Actor they cast as Kate Kane has left. If Batwoman were not a comics character they might make a substitution like this without comment. I'm actually pretty interested to see a different character under the cowl.

This is clearly a far from exhausting list - and it's writer heavy because I tend to follow writers not artists. We'll be adding to it.

Go follow them, and find more women to follow, and listen. You don't have to agree, but it's high time that we listened to what women have to say.
