The Wednesday Waffle Episode Three

Welcome to the third Wednesday Waffle! Watch the video below, or read the text, or do both - they're not entirely the same... Here is the news! COMICSGATE TOXICITY AND SOCIAL MEDIA NONSENSE DOES REAL DAMAGE We are not big fans of this story, but we're covering it because it's an important cautionary tale that we should think seriously about. I'm going to take my Desties hat off and speak personally for a second - although I do speak for Destination Venus because it's my company. I believe that comics is a community. I don't agree with, or even like, everyone in the community. This is normal in communities. But we are all into comics, and that should give us common ground. I make one exceptio

Expect this week's "What's on the Rack?" later today. (If you're reading this on Wednesday 22nd July...) Don't forget we're open this afternoon between 4pm and 6pm - and again on Saturday between 1pm and 5.30pm. We are also continuing our free delivery service in Harrogate and Knaresborough. The Wednesday Waffle Episode One: The Waffle Rebooted.

Click here to see this week's rack. Click here to see last week's rack. Hello! Since setting up this website (which is either the third or forth incarnation of destinationvenus.co.uk) we've written/filmed forty seven Wednesday Waffles and One Hundred and Eleven Daily Waffles. And now, as we emerge from lockdown, blinking in the light of a new dawn, we're "pulling a Marvel" and rebooting the Wednesday Waffle from #1. The Wednesday Waffle was originally intended to be a place for us to ponder and pontificate, and it will sometimes still be that. But it will not also be a place to share news of the shop and news from the wider world of comics. Essentially, we're doing this because we learned a

CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK'S RACK DON'T FORGET - WE ARE OPEN TODAY! 1pm -5.30pm 1 At 2pm, on Tuesday 17th of March 2020 we closed up our shelves, stowed our comics boxes and walked out of the Everyman. The shop has been closed ever since. We spent lockdown trying to keep people supplied, delivering by hand and posting out comics. For a long time we had no new comics to sell, and that was hard, but so many of our loyal customers stepped up and supported us - for which we will be forever grateful - we managed to stay afloat. Just. This afternoon, finally, we will begin limited re-opening. It's going to be very good to be back. BATMAN WILL NOT REBOOT AFTER #100 DC had planned to re-start

CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK'S RACK DON'T FORGET - WE ARE OPEN TOMORROW! 1pm -5.30pm TRAVEL TO DIVOC-91 AS COMICS CREATORS TEAM UP TO TEACH ABOUT COVID-19 15% of the Earth's young people are whisked off to the planet of Divoc-91 to isolate them from an extinction level pandemic. That's the premise of a nine part satirical comic coming to WebToons this month. Produced by Dr Bella Starling of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Sara Kenney of Wowbagger Productions, in association with the UK Academy of Medical Sciences, this series has brought together a wealth of comics creating talent - including the UK Comics Laureate Hannah Berry, Nick Brokenshire, Sara Kenney and Charl

CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK'S RACK NO VIDEO TODAY - TOO BUSY WITH DELIVERIES AND SETTING UP FOR RE-OPENING DON'T FORGET - WE ARE OPEN THIS SATURDAY, 1pm -5.30pm THE NEW TV BATWOMAN IS ANNOUNCED And they've been refreshingly bold. Ruby Rose stepped down as Kate Kane / Batwoman at the end of the first season, and the producers were clear that they would re-cast the role. We assumed that they would recast the role of Kate Kane. They didn't. They re-cast Batwoman. In season 2, Batwoman will not be Kate Kane. Instead they've cast Javicia Leslie - whose previous work is unfamiliar to me - as a new character named Ryan Wilder, who is a very different person to the disciplined, ex-military Kat

"What's on the Rack" will be posted later today. MARVEL WALKS BACK ON DIGITAL ONLY You may remember a few weeks ago I was rather miffed that several Marvel titles were effectively being cancelled as print comics and that the final few issues would be digital only. Well, I wasn't the only person annoyed by this, and now it appears that Marvel have reversed their decision. This report comes from Bleeding Cool, not Marvel directly, but BC are generally pretty accurate about things like this, especially when they are able to give details of shi

CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK'S RACK TIME TO RE-CONSIDER A JUSTICE LEAGUE MUSICAL? OK, but hear me out. Yesterday Bleeding Cool reminded the world of a genuine 1972 proposal from DC to produce a stage musical based on the Justice League. If you think that sounds absurd, consider that it was coming off the back of a 1966 Superman musical which, although well reviewed was at the time Broadway's biggest ever flop. So yes. Stupid idea. Or is it? You might wonder whether people would want to see a musical about superheroes, but honestly - why wouldn't they. A few years ago if you told me that somebody was writing a musical about late eighteenth century American politics I'd have thought that

CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT THIS WEEK'S RACK MARVEL TAKES OVER THE COMICS RIGHTS FOR ALIENS AND PREDATOR Moderately unsurprising - Disney now owns Fox who own both franchises, and Disney owns Marvel. It does make sense to keep all the money in house. It's the end of an era though. Dark Horse has held those licences for more than thirty years, and while there have been some low points across the years, Dark Horse also produced some exceptionally good Science Fiction action. Perhaps somewhat predictably Marvel appears to have plans to pitch the Aliens against The Guardians of the Galaxy and a Predator against the Avengers. We'll wait and see how well that works - Batman, Superman and Judge Dredd h

WHAT'S ON THE RACK TO FOLLOW TOMORROW VALIANT ANNOUNCES VIRTUAL PORTFOLIO REVIEWS Valiant isn't the biggest publisher in the world, but they have been around for a long tome and they publish some good stuff. Now they're actively looking for people to work with. In a press release they have announced that they will be running online reviews of artists portfolios, with one on one review sessions available for artists, colourists and letterers. This is a chance for people to get their work in front of great editors who probably won't hire you, but who will be giving you top notch professional feedback that might well go a long way towards getting you hired in the future.
